Unity for a Healthier Community
March 9, 2017
Rally 4 Wellness Health Fair, on April 8, celebrates the opening of the Community Wellness HUB.
The Community Wellness HUB is a place-based, community-driven, health promotion partnership between Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions and the residents of Mantua and Powelton Village. The HUB seeks to help HEAL the community residents through preventative care, UNITE the community around better health, and BRIDGE the community to health services and health education programming, while tackling the social determinants that underlies their health disparities.
Through the support of volunteer staff, the HUB offers free health and wellness programming and disease prevention education including screening, counseling and referral services, that addresses the top health needs of Mantua and Powelton Village residents, uncovered while conducting the “We’re Here Because We Care” Building Healthy Communities Together initiative. These top health concerns were identified as access to care, environmental health (Aging in Place), mental/behavioral health, sexual health, access to nutritious food, lack of exercise and chronic diseases. The HUB will also provide clinical treatment services to the uninsured residents. Utilizing a social justice method, this work will connect Drexel’s expertise and practices to the health needs of the community. Drawing on Drexel University’s resources, students, staff and faculty, the Community Wellness HUB will sustainably provide a comprehensive health program that connects theory to practice, aiming to promote positive health outcomes for community residents.
The Community Wellness HUB is scheduled to formally open on Tuesday, April 11th and will be located on the second floor of the Carriage House at Drexel’s Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships, 3509 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA. The Community Wellness HUB will provide services Tuesdays – Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. The HUB will also be open one Saturday per month from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Clinical/treatment services will be provided only for uninsured residents every Thursday from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
